Jay Schmetz

Artist Statement:
Through painting I am able to express myself and render statements about life. I am a “people watcher“and an "animal lover" and i try to relate these subjects in a creative, meaningfull way, I am inspired through observing human nature, situations, society, animal behavior and human behavior. Because of my desire to communicate on a level that people can relate to, I choose to paint everyday scenes of animals in human situations. I enjoy a sense of humor and hope that my paintings have an appeal that brings joy, laughter, and thought to a viewer.
I am inspired by my own pets. My wife and I have a small animal sanctuary with pigs, dogs, and cats that have been rescued from shelters and other situations were possible animal neglect occurred. I have a strong appreciation for animals and people and hope the paintings will inspire others to have compassion for them as well.
Of equal importance to me are the formal elements of painting such as color, composition, line, surface quality and use of space. The works of Picasso, Matisse, and Van Gogh are great influences on the evolution of my painting technique. I strive to create unique and entertaining pictures.
