Saheli: 1000 Cranes of Peace Art Installation  •  Aug. 2nd-21st  •  Mon - Sat 10-6

Origami Cranes have become a symbol of world peace through the story of Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who contracted leukemia because of radiation from the atomic bomb during World War II. Her story is told in the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Now, people all over the world fold and display origami cranes as a symbol of peace.

We are bringing that spirit to the Austin community by folding 1000 Cranes of Peace to raise funds and awareness for survivors of domestic violence. SAHELI is a non-profit organization based out of Austin that provide services and assistant to Asian and other immigrant families dealing with domestic violence and the organization's  goal is to raise $10,000. These funds will go to SAHELI’s Survivor Assistance Program, which provides advocacy, counseling and resources to Asian survivors of domestic violence in the Austin area.

The installation itself is to display the cranes as a tribute to the community and the donors. Each crane represents a $10 donation and the individual donor’s name on it. Sculpture is designed by a local budding artist Supriya Kharod & SAHELI staff member, Catherina Conte.  It stands 7’ tall and 5’ in diameter.

Please stop by ART on 5th to support SAHELI in their mission.
