The wildly imaginative creations included in the Secret Art Collection show a previously unseen dimension of Theodor Seuss Geisel's art. SLUDGE TARPON - NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER AT ART on 5TH

Ted Geisel’s success as an up-and-coming ad man in the late 1920s paved the way for what would become one of his signature ad campaigns for boating lubricants. Officially launched in the spring of 1934, his promotion kicked off with a “Secrets of the Deep” booklet featuring over 25 of Seuss’s uproarious aquatints.

In the early 1930s, Ted Geisel created what he called A Collection of Unorthodox Taxidermy, a menagerie of Seussian animals constructed from real animal beaks and horns.  On the heals of that project, Seuss embarked upon a second collection, this time of sea-going creatures, that he ultimately linked to a 1937 advertising promotion at New York’s National Motor Boat Show.  This was the debut of his “Seuss Navy,” replete with an Admiral’s Membership Certificate, jigger drinking glasses, and his six re-purposed taxidermy sculptures, which he termed “Marine Muggs.”

Describing Seuss’s 1937 boat show exhibit, a reporter for Yachting wrote, “From the briny depths of the imagination of the famous designer, Dr. Seuss . . . come a collection of the weirdest denizens of the deep ever imagined in the wildest nightmare of a skipper.”

Geisel’s print ad for his famed Sludge Tarpon headlined, “Here’s sludge in your eye!”

Created during Ted’s most prolific sculpting phase, the Sludge Tarpon comes from a rare class of just six “Marine Muggs,” sculpted circa 1934-36, years before appearing in any ad campaign.  This was a consistent pattern in Seuss’s creative process, many times creating images and works for his own pleasure and then linking them to future commercial projects.

Now, seventy-five years later, we proudly present Seuss’s Marine Mugg, Sludge Tarpon, as a wall-mounted, hand-painted cast resin sculpture in a limited edition of 850.  Faithfully re-created and approved by Dr Seuss’s widow, Mrs. Audrey Geisel, this artwork takes its rightful place as a rare addition to the Seuss Sculpture Collection.

MONEY FOR THE ARTS - AVAILABLE FOR ORDER NOW

To this day, Theodor Seuss Geisel, or his estate, has never made an original Seuss painting available for sale, except for one.

Professing indifference to wealth, Ted Geisel called money “a necessary evil,” thus giving away much of his.  As agent Herb Cheyette puts it, “A literary and artistic genius not indifferent to the relationship of art and commerce, [Seuss] spent a great deal of thought making certain that his estate would continue to generate income to benefit society.”

The Dr. Seuss Foundation, established in 1958, has quietly enjoyed a half century of significant gifting, which reflects the universal interests of its namesake.  Today the Dr. Seuss Foundation provides primary support for over one hundred medical, cultural and socially active institutions.

In 1963, Ted Geisel donated a recent (circa 1962) painting from his La Jolla Birdwoman series to a charity auction benefiting the La Jolla Art Center.  This prized artwork titled Mrs. Norilee Schneelock Poured, Miss Nesselroda Sugared, or Raising Money for the Arts in La Jolla, won the top auction bid of the night, more than was paid for a Cézanne drawing.   It was the one and only time Ted offered one of his paintings for “sale.”

Today, we proudly announce the release of the Raising Money for the Arts print edition.  This hand-pulled serigraph pays homage to patrons who also support the valuable role played by fine art galleries, which make it possible for us to experience art's inspiration each and every day.

To advance Seuss’s legacy of supporting the arts, a second state of Raising Money for the Arts will be created in the future with the intention of raising $250,000 for arts organizations here and abroad.

Raising Money for the Arts finds our two granddames of good intentions elegantly nestled in deco environs, happily doing the important work of promoting the arts.  Dressed in their turn-of-the-century finery, they are reminiscent of a time when the visual arts were not only fast becoming part of the common culture, but also their harbingers, Expressionism, Abstraction and Fantasy, were “like soldiers marching to different drummers.”   New and exciting art forms, increasing public mobility, plus an explosion of exhibition venues, all converged to entice the masses into a newfound love affair with the arts – a 100-year love affair that thrives today under the auspices of patrons, great and small.

ANTHONY DREXEL GOLDFARB - NOW AVAILABLE AT ART on 5TH

While Anthony Drexel Goldfarb (circa 1934) has seen his name recycled by his creator as “Peeping Drexel” in Dr. Seuss’s 1939 The Seven Lady Godivas, its origin can’t be pinpointed to a specific person or influence. Suffice it to say, the name has all the flair of a Seussian invention — a marvelous one-of-a-kind creation, born into a small, ingenious circle of never-before-seen beasts of absurdity.

Anthony Drexel Goldfarb is presented as a wall-mounted, hand-painted, cast resin sculpture with leather ears, in a limited edition of 850. Collectors seeking to complete their Secret Art Taxidermy Series will take great joy in the charm and personality of this work. We look forward to speaking with you about this exceptional collecting opportunity.
